Sweet potatoes with piloncillo syrup

Hello guys! I’m back.

Now that it’s Holiday season, I can’t wait to cook and to share some wonderful récipes with you.

I love the fall season, I get to enjoy yummy dishes like mashed potatoes and mashed sweet potatoes. Now….. for us Mexicans, we eat sweet potatoes for dessert. Sounds weird huh?


Usually here in the U.S. we eat the sweet mash or casserole accompanied by savory dishes. Today you will learn to make “Camote enmielado” which is basically sweet potatoes with syrup. It’s easy, cheap and delicious.


– 5 sweet potatoes (peeled and cut into medium size cubes)

– 2 bars of piloncillo (this is unrefined sugar cane, it can be found at hispanic markets or at Whole Foods) I recommend a hispanic market because it will be much cheaper

– 1 cinnamon stick

– pinch of salt

– 1 quarter cup of water


 In a medium pot, place sweet potatoes,water, cinnamon and piloncillo. Cover and cook at low heat for about 30 to 45 min until the sweet potatoes are tender. They should be super soft, I eat them by themselves or you can add a little bit of milk.

This is super easy, fast and vegan friendly. ¡Buen provecho!
